All the 12a refrigerants are blends of inflammable hydrocarbon gases. Good news - they are just about completely harmless to the environment. Bad news - they could theoretically toast you if they caught fire (though it seems to me the car already has enough ways to do that if so inclined!). Though apparently 134a is not as non-flammable as we have been led to believe (and not as environmentally safe either). Freeze-12, on the other hand, seems to be a proprietary blend, mostly 134a with a bit of some other gas mixed in to help it carry the old mineral oil that was used with R12. A lot of people don't like it, because they feel that having only 1/3 or so of the gas be capable of carrying the oil will cause eventual failure from lack of lubrication. I have no idea if this is a real problem or not.
Chance of going up in flames aside, the 12a's have a lot of attractions. Being cheap, you can simply throw in a can every few weeks or months the way we all used to do with freon, with no need to feel guilty. 5 oz of 12a replaces 16 oz of freon, so it only takes 2 $4 cans to fill or refill the system on a 900. Also, 12a doesn't like to be filled into a hard vacuum, so you don't need to pump.
I just grabbed a few cans of Maxi-Frig, probably the cheapest and least reputable of the 12a family (the label looks like it was made by a 12 year old on an inkjet) and will be trying it out in our 900S.
