The smell, feel, and look of it is MTF. The entire tranny case is covered in it, and I can actually see where the drip builds up and then releases. It comes from any spot where a gasket is used on the tranny case. Every gasket sealing area, including the bolts, are wet with MTF. It's all concentrated 1/2-way on the tranny case and below (the upper portion of the case is dry).
In fact, the tranny dipstick is showing that the level is 1/2-way between the two marks, and it was at the top line (max) when I filled it with MTF 6 mths/10K miles ago.
I do know people have had problems in the past with switching from dino to synth oil and having the oil leak out old, brittle gaskets, so I'm assuming this is the same thing happening. My concern is that it's doing it with the new rear cover gasket as well. I can also see the the MTF is making its way out where the shift linkage goes into the case as that whole area is dripping with it.
When I change all the gaskets, do I put in new MTF or go back to 10W-30?
Also, are there any surprises when changing these gaskets? Springs popping out or pieces of transmission falling out?
