Might need to break out the tiny violins for this one.
About 4 months ago, I couldn't get my car into reverse ... turns out the coupler(?) between the shift and the transmission needed to be replaced. Just prior to that, a friend of mine had borrowed the car. It got fixed up in a shop and they tightened up the linkages and everything seemed to be fine.
Last weekend, I needed new tires and couldn't wait for the shop to open on Monday so I went to a tire store. I handed over the keys and when they came back two hours later with my car, I noticed the kid was having trouble driving it over. He asked me if I wanted to leave it running ... I said sure. When I tried to put it in first, the stick went way up far and to the left and the gear wouldn't engage. I then ran through some of the other gears, including reverse and everything seemed to line back up. I left the lot and got on a small highway, only to find that it slipped again when I turned around. I went back to the tire shop and they had closed. The rest of the weekend, it seemed to work okay. I went to work on Monday and couldn't get it in fifth gear ... driving 65 in 4th gear for 50 miles put enough pressure to blow out the exhaust and I pulled into my office lot sounding like a Harley. I called the tire shop and told them the situation and asked if there was anything they could do to help get it fixed. They said they would call me back. And the next day, after I had got my car to the shop, they actually did and said that if the mechanic could verify that something like that could happen ... mechanic was unable to say for sure.
In the end, the mechanic doesn't know what is wrong. He said everything looked OK from the outside (linkage, etc). If I want to do more with it, I should take it to a transmission specialist.
Unfortunately, I may need to buy a new car ... and hopefully keep this one. It is so hard to try to find a replacement in this world where all the once great semi-affordable cars have been bought up by the big auto makers.
I've been putting off this day, but the risk of breaking down during a long commute is becoming too great. Thought some of you would identify.
Cheers-
Kevin
