Discount tire joints hire the cheapest labor they can find...that way the CEO can make his boat payments, pay a nanny to raise his kids, keep his wife & mistress dressed in expensive clothes - etc...
I worked as a salesman at multiple TFT stores for several years & though there were some (not many) exceptions, the guys hired to install tires were completely unqualified, had NO training & learned by doing...generally at the expense of the customer. Most took the bus to work & predominately came from the projects. You could always smell pot on their clothes when they came back from lunch & they spent whatever extra money they had on scratch off lottery tickets, cigarettes & expensive gas station junk food. Turnover was high (no pun intended) & whether due to parole violations or a better paying job at McDonalds, we were always hiring new faces. Not the kind of people I'd want working on my car!
After I once saw a nice BMW jacked up by the oil pan, I spent an inordinate amount of time checking on the goons whenever an expensive car came in. Not a day went by without having some kind of stupid mistake or carelessness result in a problem. We routinely sent cars to a local repair shop to have broken studs replaced (often without telling the customer anything!)...the cost was offset by not having to pay qualified mechanics to do proper work.
I could count on at least one customer every few days coming back to complain about broken studs, striped lug nuts, hubcaps that flew off - lug nuts cross threaded, or on so tight they couldn't be removed...missing spare tires were always my favorite. I won't bore you with the mundane problems like scratched paint, grease on the seats, money missing from the glove box or ash tray, etc...that stuff was routinely encountered several times a day.
The moral here is, you get what you pay for. If you can't do it yourself - find a qualified & trustworthy mechanic. It's tempting to go to a tire chain for new sneakers, if you must - do some snooping around first, if the place is nasty, run away! When I need tires, I put my winter wheels on & deliver the the loose rims needing rubber to a friend of mine still in the business...if things are slow, I personally mount the tires - when I've got to leave them, I give the "lead man" $20 ahead of time & ask him to mount them himself. I'd NEVER hand over the keys to my car (Saab or otherwise) to anyone/anyplace unless as a last resort.
Having said this - it's certainly possible you had a preexisting tranny or linkage issue just waiting for someone to manhandle the gears & wake the sleeping dog. Sorry about the rant! Good luck :)
