I had a situation one time in my first '85 900T about 12 years ago. I was driving through the panhandle of Oklahoma in the middle of the night (the best time to make that drive) and I started to lose the ability to get into different gears. I finally limped into Ok City at about 10 AM with only 3rd and 4th gear and that was a wasn't even consistent. I was freaking out, 500 miles from home, in a town I didn't know very well and a transmission that was shot.
The first thing I did was pull the center console to inspect the linkage, when I pulled the shifter out I found that the plastic ball at the bottom of the shifter had pretty much disintegrated. I think the part cost me about $12 at the dealer and I was happy motoring again.
My point is that minor linkage problems can feel like major trouble. If you are not familiar with the linkage then get a Bentley manual and read up. I can't see dumping the car over this, especially if it means a car payment every month to get another car.
