Sorry to hear about your car troubles! If the brake system is old and hasn't been bled for a very long while any work you do on the system (ie. bleeding the brakes or even the clutch) can cause the master cylinder to fail. Each times i've had a "new to me" car I've done the responsible thing and bled the brakes and clutch. Very often (at least half of the time) my actions have resulted in a master cylinder failure within hours, days or weeks. In other words . . . its not you! That's just the way it goes. Now, whenever i work on a hydraulic system that i know hasn't been properly serviced i make sure that i have a new master cylinder on hand.
As for the DOT3: i think you may be blaming the fluid for a bunch of pre-existing problems. I have used DOT3 and DOT4 interchangeably for years with no problems. There have been many discussions on this board about it. The only difference is that DOT4 has a somewhat higher boiling point- something that you are unlikley to put to the test unless you drive your car competatively.
