The valves, cc roof, and pistons all look really clean. I'll see about snapping some pictures this weekend, but I really can't find anything obviously wrong.
I'm starting to wonder if the timing chain was replaced, and perhaps installed wrong, then got wound up around itself at the crank. I accidentally did that to myself once (doh!) and ended up with an engine that would spin about 180 degrees...
Figuring out what somebody else's done is always so much harder than figuring out what you've done...
