The radio can't be unlocked without a code, though I guess if you're feeling lucky, you could keep trying codes. There is a way to get it to accept codes again, though it escapes me at the moment.
Though, if you use an iPod or other MP3 player, there are many, many more options out there, as I'm sure you know. Couple years ago, I replaced the Saab Clarion in my 1990 900 with an Alpine that has their "Full Speed" iPod connection, and haven't looked back.
I like the Saab Clarion units, as they really look "right" in the car. Mostly, they only need good speakers to shine, but with so many other music options out there, it's hard to justify keeping them in the car.
