I agree with pjkbrit - if you got five miles in a no-oil condition, it would be a miracle. Low-oil is tough - how low is low?
Car gearboxes are designed to be run with oil. It carries away heat, it cushions mating surfaces, and it carries away heat (yes, repeated.) There are gearboxes that are designed to run while dry - helicopter gearboxes come to mind - but the engineering and additional cost for that is prohibitive for a car. And even in that case, they can run 20 minutes or so before melting into slag.
Take a car engine, cut off the oil pressure, and you'll lunch the bearings in seconds under load. Parts of the gearbox also take similar loads.
A buddy of mine bought a brand new Chrysler back in the late 80's, and the drain plug fell out of automatic tranny sometime after he left the dealership with it. The transmission. packed up and siezed, and there were only 7 miles on the odo.
