School Me on Transmissions

I've been a 9-5 owner for 6 years now, have enjoyed the car, and have been able to perform DIY repairs on all the typical issues that pop up with the 9-5 model.
I would like to get a classic 900 Turbo for a 'project car'. From what I can tell with casual browsing here and on ebay, it seems to me that transmission problems are a common and chronic issue with these cars.
For manual transmissions, are there years that have "better" or "worse" transmissions? IIRC, aren't the later years more durable due to a larger pinion gear - or something like that?
Are the automatice transmissions a Borg-Warner design, and can they be rebuilt with new bands and other components fairly easily, similar to a typical USA-made automatic?
Any and all related comments would be appreciated.
