Yes, essentially you need to get the seal exactly into place over the crank. That is what the offical Saab tool does.
The makeshift shower tool needs to be bolted on as evenly as possible. It goes right on with little problems, provided the seal and tool is centered properly. And yes, a little oil helps it slip on.
Since you already had a problem you should see if someone can loan you the special tool. I don't have it as the light tap to start, shower tool to finish worked great. with the shower tool I did one turn on each side until it was flush.
By the way, don't push the seal too much past flush. Bentley says to go a bit past flush to set in a slightly different place. This somehow is supposed to help seal. I did not see any wear on the shaft so I just went flush.
