The limited space is due to the large metal piece that is part of the transmission, don't know the name of the part, I think it is where the input shaft seal goes.

The space limitation is because of this piece. I can't get a regular drill in there. I was able to use a right angle drill but not with a normal bit. The easy-out bit is much shorter than a normal bit.

Your idea of using a center punch might work. I will try to find a good punch, an maybe sharpen it a bit.
