I have the same problem with my car. (94 vert) I was wondering what the purpose of the valve was. I asked the local Indy and he said "Bypass Valve" and told me they were prone to "Catastrophic Failure". He mentioned some sort of coupling as a replacement, but I didn't probe at the time.
I guess 3 questions come to mind.
Is this an important part. I've been told it is expensive for what it is.
Does getting rid of the function of bypassing cause problems.
What size and type barbed fitting to use.
At the very least I think I would keep a few of the fittings in the trunk for emergency.
