Keep the SPG and get the wagon.
Is the R version of the V70 AWD?
I've got a 2002 V70XC for the family. It is a very nice riding car. I wouldn't worry about the loss of stability on windy roads. They are a different ride, but I drive it just like my classic SAABs--no problem. It's a real joy on the highway. We've driven it to NY from FL in a single clip fully loaded with cargo and 3 kids. Good looking car too IMHO.
Issues: The driver's window switch control circuitry is prone to failure. Be prepared to replace the outer tie rod ends a lot. Front springs can break (the replacements are not Chinese junk like the originals and are reliable). I've had to replace a failed steering rack, a failed alternator and a failed transmission. Pretty much the same as a classic SAAB, only more expensive. The transmission was a $4500 job.
