All I have usually found is that :
a) The brushes go bad and need replacement.
b) The grease gets hard and needs replacement.
To rebuild you need to get GM alternator brushes and file to shape, then uncrimp and unweld the old ones and replace recrimp and resolder the new ones.
Regrease is just that.
Getting the piece back together is fiddly, and requires paper clips to hold the brushes out of the way as you fight magnetism in order to get the stator to fit back into it's bearing.
Then place in a plastic bag and zip tie to keep moisture out a la Saab OEM style.
