Ground wire sometimes breaks or get disconnected. Alternator body needs a good strong wire to ground as it's mounted in rubber bushings and otherwise no current will flow.
The brushes-voltage regulator can be done ALTERNATOR IN CAR. Disconnect nothing except battery negative terminal, and reach two phillips screws for the voltage regulator via a very long (12" or so I sort of recall) screwdriver angled up as I recall it just above the oil pressure sender. Won't fit square into the screws but can be held in, and tapping rear of screwdriver with a hammer as you twist should crack the screws loose, then they'll just spin out.
You kind of twist the new one into place, compressing brushes as you do, then hold it down against its seat and brushes compressed, get one screw started and run in, put other screw in, wiggling VR to find the hole. Tighten screws to refusal, reconnect battery and you're done, if that's the problem, which it usually is.
