This is a not uncommon problem with the ABS cars. Usually this happens in hot weather with a lot of stop and go (traffic) driving that makes the ABS unit work hard and ocverheat. Once they over heat, the ABS and BRAKE lights come on and usually stopping power is drastically reduced. Once the unit cools off (as your did) all is well.
Notnoel uses a cotton sock over the accumulator (AKA bomb) and wets it when the ABS unit overheats. This cools the unit very rapidly (open hood helps), and in 5 minutes things are better. I have used this method with success a few times this summer.
I am making a cooling system for my ABS pump, using air blown over the ABS unit, triggered by a thermostat. The sock method is good for correcting the problem, but I am exploring ways to avoid it.
Also consider flushing the old brake fluid out if it is more than 2 years old. I have been told that may help too.
