My approach was a bit haphazard on my 88 SPG, although it seems to have calmed down a bit. IIRC, the biggest impact I had was installing a new 02 sensor. It seemed to me it was engine temp related, hence swapping out the NTC sensor first as it was much easier, but not effective. Moved to the 02 next. Went thru the bentley procedure to measure it, measurements came back poor to say the least.
I also replaced all of the turbo couplings, RTV'd the gromments, new dashpot (mine was toast anyway), couple of other new vaccumm lines. Hell, I went as far a a compression and leakdown test to make sure I didn't have a headgasket problem as a hunting idle could be one or a combination of a million things. Of course, I am also battling base boost and some other things, but the idle is much smoother. Still not idling like my old 89 spg (which was purrrrrr - fect somehow while the car fell apart around it), but more than drivable.
Take Care,
Nate
