As I recall, the mileage on the transmission was quite low (guy said it had about 30,000 on it when it was put in, only a few years ago), but I think it has control issues of some sort that may have caused the front band to wear quicker than normal. We already fixed a late 1-2 shift when cold by cleaning out the governor. Drove it about two weeks, made sure fluid was at a good level, and everything seemed fine.
Then, at the end of an hour-long drive, I started to experience a funny sort of kickdown from second to first, even at light throttle. Then the transmission would recover and put itself firmly in second. I was afraid to push it hard, so I don't know whether it would slip. I parked it overnight, and it was much worse in the morning. It was acting "confused" between first and second. It was almost like it wanted to kickdown into first from second, or maybe it was slipping in second, until it finally shifted to third. Should I just drop the pans and check the action of the valves? I wish I had a pressure gauge, but the only affordable ones are a week's shipping away, on Amazon . com.
Re: manual swap, I have all the parts I need, shifter, console, pedals, clutch, line, master, slave, blah blah blah, and a lot of good friends with parts cars, so I should be OK. Also trying to rebuild the manual before we put it in (boyfriend has the pinion and backlash tools). But we need time. It would be so good if this automatic would last me through the summer.
