Many, many stories of people getting used low mileage T37s that fail to work properly shortly after installation. Very often the installer neglected to decontaminate the ATF cooling circuit. The original, high mileage unit that they removed (usually apart on my bench at some point) was radically damaged inside and had been pumping fine metal shavings through the cooler for a long time. The low mileage salvage yard unit they installed was then found to have valves jammed by fine metal shavings. Hmmm, where could those have come from?
Failure to properly adjust the shift control cable after installation is also common and will usually lead to major internal damage and prompt complete failure of a T37. Guys seem to think that if the the old unit's cable was adjusted OK then there's no need to make the adjustment for the new unit. Big mistake! Some guys get lucky because the adjustment point of the old and new units just happen to be the same, a roll of the dice.
One other very common problem is people filling their T37 with Dexron ATF instead of type F. A little Dexron won't usually cause a problem but once it becomes the major constituent that T37 just goes nuts on them. Leaky units often get a pint of Dexron every so often until eventually they contain mostly Dexron. Type F is getting harder to buy and if you don't insist on it a counter guy may tell you that Dexron will work just fine.
