i was just in this predicament about 8 months ago with my spg. my preference would have been a 3-5K 2/3-stage paint job, but i couldn't justify the cost on my car. so i did most of the prep work myself which saved $$ and greatly improved the finished product, and opted for an $800 maaco job which turned out GREAT!! i have gotten to know my local maaco guy over the years (which helps, and all maacos are not created equally). he is very detail oriented and will make anything right that i'm not happy with. there is also a decent warranty on the finish so, overall, i am pleased with the results. Considering the cost & what i needs it to be, which is not a concourse show car, that can be a good alternative.
I also really like the look of this PlastiDip product (search youtube) which is DIY and looks very cool on the right type of car. I think that can be done for under $500. Just depends on what you want on the finished side. Good luck!
