I've used Maaco over the years on several cars in several different parts of the country with good results. The key is to buy their top end job and strip the car of everything possible. Bumpers, headlights, grill, tail lights, side moldings, mirrors, door handles etc.
I recently had my 94 painted. I too was looking at $3,000 to $3,500 from body shops. I then asked my local auto body supply shop for names of anyone they could recommend that moonlight. I got a pretty good two stage job done for $1,600 which included some minor body work, with stripping the car as mentioned above. My only complaint was some dust issues that required some wet sanding and polishing, so check out their spray location carefully for possible dust problems.
I've since found a one man body shop with low overhead that does excellent work for fairly less than larger shops. They out there, it just takes a little time to find them. Good Luck,
