If you're going to swap to LH, yeah, might as well go LH 2.4 from a '90 or newer. It is a bit simpler to go with LH 2.2 since you don't need to get a vehicle speed signal, though. My opinion is that if you're going to tear into it, you might as well do it right.
The wiring harness is self-contained, with only a couple connections to the chassis wiring - power, switched power ground, tach signal, and speed signal. The power can come from the positive distribution block, the switched from from the fuel pump relay or the switched "bus" under the fusebox, ground is on the engine, and tach signal and speed sensor from the cluster. For the speed sensor, the easiest thing to do it swap the speedo with one from a '90+. You will need the speedo cable too. If the car has cruise and you want to keep it, you'll need to modify some wiring behind the dash - on an '80, I wouldn't expect cruise. The tach signal comes from the tach, no problem.
If you're really into it, installing APC and/or Hall-Effect ignition is pretty easy too - especially if you do both at the same time. These are essentially little subsystems and pretty modular.
The notion to go T5 is a very decent one, though, with a lot of merit. It's not much more wiring - just a little physical installation of the trigger wheel and sensor. There's a discussion from a few months ago about this - it was very informative for me! My only hesitation about T5 is the cost/ongoing availability of ignition cassettes, but right now things look good.
