Sounds like some rain on the parade. Before I got a vacuum pump I did a number of AC recharges without drawing down the system with vacuum. They seemed to work quite well. I'm not a chill freak and I don't like having a 1/2 can left over so I generally put a little less than the recommended refrigerant. If you want to pull a vacuum on your system the cruise control pump will do a fair job. Pulls it down to about the same level as my commercial refrigerant pump. Remove it from the fender. Set up a couple jumper wires for power and ground. Then you'll need a recharge or pressure gauge hose with the low side( R134) fitting on it. Cut the end off that has the gauge or the can fitting. Plug the cut end of the hose on the cruise pump nipple. Plug into the system and power up.
