OK, that drive didn't yield much beyond a few potentially useful clues:
1. The ABS light came on for ~3 seconds about a mile into the drive but well before I had reached operating temps. It went out and did not re-light again over the course of ~15 minutes of driving in suburban neighborhoods.
2. The stereo did not cut out altogether but at some point the digital display did trip from station ID to "failure" and remained in that mode until shutdown to go into a convenience store; upon restart all was well.
3. Wipers were on intermittent-- not only was it raining lightly so I needed them, but I thought it might simulate the rad fan kicking in and trip my radio but no dice-- I didn't miss a second of All Things Considered even after coming to normal operating temp (gauge at ~3:15).
4. Voltage drop at idle between alt. case and neg. terminal still -0.04 V upon return to garage. Voltage to battery terminals at idle, headlights on, wipers still on intermittent was 13.86 V and did not change with wiper cycling. However, radiator cooling fan was running, so perhaps the system was already "activated" to accommodate the additional demand for power?
I will confess that at this point I know absolutely nothing-- including (but not limited to-- the fact that maybe I don't have an actual problem to be worried about but it's never done this before and so something has surely changed. I'd blame it on the Sony aftermarket stereo except for the headlkight flicker and infrequent ABS lightup.
Sigh...
