'87 had worse brakes than later cars and the electical issues. 89 had some ECU problems. The airbag and ABS are problematic since they are old so don't just go for that.
Find 88 to 93 turbo with good paint job and well taken care of with maint records. I have a bad paint job and I can't justify the cost of a good job so I may get a cheap one which kind of bothers me.
Do the tranny on the 92 only if the car is in awsome shape. You could do a roadtrip to get a good one from the classified. West coast and SW only and you will have no rust. See if you can find a 5 door turbo up in Canada, That would be awsome. I'm really tired of the two door but love the hatch.
Good luck.
