As someone pointed out, I basically needed an Input Shaft Puller. But I will call it a "Cmyles Special Tool" just to set things straight. OK, so, took a socket, found four serious washers, then got a 1.25 inch 8mm bolt. Starting out, I was getting concerned when the washers started to bow in a bit, but we had a 24 inch breaker bar and and were not going to give up. After one full turn it suddenly went *POP* and it was loose but needed more coaxing to get it out all the way. I never remember needing this much force for the one I removed when I replaced a clutch. We simply could not move this input shaft with our attempts to pry it out. So, to my mind, a puller is better. One thing I should say: this car sat outside and not running for a good period of time, so, perhaps corrosion got to it. The clutch was certainly rusted.
But that didn't solve the last issue: the pressure plate.
We were making no progress making our own "Saab Special Tool" that looks like a UHF antenna, or whatever that circular coat hanger thing is. We could not get it under the teeth correctly; just a game of whack-a-mole as the spacers would come out as soon as we put the next one in. I had to take a chisel and cut through the release bearing and it was no piece of cake. Finally, release bearing was toast, and the engine and tranny separated promptly.
I degreased it best I could, but I was amazed to find that this transmission is a GM 457 14 which doesn't quite make sense. It has a drain plug, filler tube but the car was a mid 1988 900 naturally aspirated 8 valve. I don't think that year of car ever actually had a transmission with that model originally. What I don't get is how GM 457 14 can have a drain plug and filler tube. Does this make sense?
Main thing: input shaft MacGyver hint proved to work in less than two minutes. Amazing what people on Saabnet know. Thanks to Cmyles!
