Bill,
If the shift coupling is adjusted wrong that will "disorient" the throw of the lever in one of four directions; forward, backward, left or right and can include a combination of any two adjacent e.g. forward and left or backward and right and to any degree from too small to matter to so extreme that certain gears can't be selected at all. Definitely get some pins of the correct size (drill bits or allan keys) and adjust the coupling. Look for evidence of separating or tearing of the rubber part as well or looseness of the fasteners if you have a late car with the dog-bone style coupling. If that adjusting doesn't help then try the reverse fix. When the gears are extremely damaged the only fix is a rebuild with better gears.
