RI - - You say new connections at battery - - do you by chance mean those new terminals where you cut off the old ones, strip back insulation, and lay the end strands onto the lead and bolt down a cover strap? If so, those things aren't worth much, they can quickly corrode under the strap and lead to further trouble.
Another thing that can happen is if too much force gets applied and a post starts to crack loose from the battery case.
And the positive cable, if original, even with a good terminal cleanly attached, can have corrosion all up inside the plastic sheath, and cause trouble like yours. If so it will "crackle" when flexed. Solution, replace entire cable.
