I have a Volvo 240 Wagon that had a bad alternator ground. The terminal end that connects to chassis was almost completely severed when I finally thought to check it. The symptoms were wacky gauge readings, intermittent glowing of the battery light, stumbling idle and other assorted weirdness. 15 minutes, new connectors and some 12 gauge wire sorted it all right out!
My '91 900 also had some similar issues, but it turned out to be regulator brushes. Made me wonder how many alternators have been replaced due to a failed, easily changed regulator. Damn near all of 'em, I would suppose!
