Run the 205/45-16 on my 88 spg with B&G springs/koni reds. Not too harsh, but it is firm. For comparison, I had 205/50-16 which rubbed on my spg arches in the front, so I changed size... didn't notice a huge difference. If your running stock suspension, you could always move up the the 205/50 or 55 with out issues (I think, but search more more info). You didn't say what brand/model tires are on the 16s now, but you could try to search them at tirerack to see what performance category they are. Different manufacturers and models will have varying stiffnesses (sp?).
I say go for it, what've you got to lose?
Take care,
Nate
