the brushes on the voltage regulator wear down close to the service limit, resulting in poor charging (BTDT, car had 160k miles and died in a heavy rainstorm 200 miles from home.) That's my bet.
Along with that, other possibilities that come to mind are
- battery could be on its way out
- alternator ground wire
- dirty ground at the radiator
- slipping harmonic balancer
and, as you mentioned battery cables.
