99% sure there is no CEL on any 8v car. There simply aren't the electronics to drive it. IIRC, the 8v cars don't even have a position for "CHECK ENGINE" - it's a yellow light that says EXH. If yours says CHECK ENGINE, maybe someone replaced the instrument cluster? That could lead the tech astray. If it says CHECK ENGINE, it must function like a CHECK ENGINE as far as the tech is concerned. If it says EXH, it does not. Just my recollection...
That said, it's very likely this tech thinks he's smarter than he is, and if he were to consult the books he'd learn the 8v cars don't have such a light and he's not obligated to look for one. Often times the smarty pants type techs assume they know what they're doing when they really don't.
