I called the ref, explained the situation and was very impressed with the help I got. He called me back after 15 minutes of research, e-mailed copies of the appropriate pages in the Mitchell guide to me and gave me all the ammo I needed to bring it back to the shop and plead my case. It's also interesting to note that as soon as I mentioned to the smog shop owner that I had contacted the ref, I became a very valued customer...
He took me back in the shop and showed me on the computer he uses to look up timing specs and emissions component locations for thousands of cars that, indeed, it specified that my '88 8V should have a CEL. It also stated that timing should be checked with the distributor vacuum hose connected -- in direct contrast to the Mitchell guide, Bentley and every other source of info I've ever seen. Finally, he checked his own old-school book to compare things with his e-version and sure enough, the book showed no mention of a CEL on that car and insisted that vac advance be plugged when timing. He apologized for the hassle, muttered under his breath "that's why I hate working on old cars" and promptly processed my approval, no charge.
Thanks for the help folks -- I don't think I ever would have considered contacting the referee otherwise. Now I need to become an expert in CIS to get this thing running right when it's cold!
