That is a good way to do it if you don't have extra inner drivers. If you take out an assembly, then remove the inner driver and bolt up the companion flange back to the transmission before you remove the other side. Then, the pumpkin assembly is supported for the duration of the operation.
Then, pull out the opposite side assembly, remove the inner driver, replace the bearing and seal, clean the assembly and install the inner driver from the other side. Move over to the other side, take off the naked companion flange and then install the opposite side inner driver.
To me, that would be a field repair where you are distanced from parts and have to get back to base. I send my inner drivers to Ericksson and have them restore them, keep a couple sets ready to go. As much trouble as it is to get in there and muscle all that stuff out of the way, I just put in restored inner drivers with new bearing/seal and call it good.....
