I took off one wheel, chocked/blocked so the car could not move, and with the lower A arm supported, started the engine, put it into gear, and let out the clutch so the axle was spinning. Then carefully with a stethoscope put the tip on the axle bearing hub and listened to the bearing.
The bearing was tight when shaking the wheel, but made noise when under rotation.
If you don't hear anything on the bearing hub, then put the stethoscope on the same side companion flange and listen to the bearing. Repeat on the opposite side.
When you drive the car and accelerate and then quickly let off the gas, is there lost motion like an engine mount is bad? If there is lost motion, then the pinion bearings can be moving allowing some slop in the drivetrain.
When you push on the gas, let off, push on the gas, let off, you should have a tight response - no lost motion.
If all that is tight then my first suspect is the same as Cmyles, the wheel bearing.
