Starter wouldn't disengage. Now very LOUD. Fix or live with it? Posted by Devin [Email] (#2469) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Devin) on Tue, 18 Oct 2016 08:09:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Dear all:
The car's a 92' Turbo with a manual tranny that my stepdad drives a hundred or so miles a month-- tops-- as a spare car.
The ignition was sticking and the starter wouldn't disengage. I used alcohol and aerosol computer cleaner and blew out the switch and not it appears fine now & the key turns freely. I banged on the solenoid with a crowbar and a rubber mallet and got it unstuck, but not before it stunk and sparked.
The car's starting now, but it's loud and angry. Anyone want to guess how long the starter'll last before it gives out entirely?
I've had cars with bad solenoids before that won't even attempt to turn over. This problem's different. It sounds like something grinds for a second then catches. I think the bendix maybe, but I didn't read the rest of that thread. Thanks as always!
Devin
