Does the car make noise when running, or only when starting?
These starters have a plastic lever arm inside that transmits the solenoid's "pull" into a "push" of the starter pinion, thrusting the pinion out into the ring gear on the flywheel. I've had starters that don't disengage until I hit them, and the culprit is usually this plastic lever arm having broken in one or more places. The starter is also equipped with a Bendix drive, so the lever has help in pushing the pinion forward, from inertia and the helical splines.
The noise, as you describe it, as a grinding prior to engagement, could be the already-whirling pinion making contact with the flywheel ring gear. This doesn't seem like a great situation. It could have been caused by a broken plastic lever arm either not moving the pinion into the flywheel (so instead it relies on the Bendix, which would have a little delay resulting in the pinion starting to turn before getting to the flywheel teeth).
The only way to find out is to disassemble the starter. Then you can buy spare starter parts on the internet, but probably easier to put a rebuilt starter in.
