Ultimately, I'm not certain. But there is no reason a head should warp coming off a cold engine. I have certainly never had it happen, and I'm a bit weary of the $80 and 24 hour wait for the machine shop to tell me nothing is wrong.
Since I don't have any reason to expect a warped head, I'd be pretty comfortable just using a straightedge and a flashlight for a spot check and calling it good.
Still, I am wrestling with that decision point. If it comes off and it's all carboned up underneath I might take it in just for the hot tank. Also I'm debating my ability to pull a head without removing manifolds first and not total the timing chain guides. :)
