I've done this once and remember enough frustration with the problem like you're suffering that motivated me to also loosen the steering column bracket bolts; the new "slop" allowed for a wobbling effect which permitted the splines to finally engage with the steering rack. Don't forget to re-tighten the bracket bolts once everything is mated.
And I messed around with a clock-spring swap earlier in the year. If you're really nervous that your wheel is now out of center, you might need to remove the clock-spring. And while in your hands, spin the clock assembly all the way to the right or the left and count how many turns it takes to get to the opposite side (without too much forcing at the end). Divide that by two and spin the assembly back to the halfway mark; that's your start-point for re-attaching to the steering column.
I think total turns for me was something like 6.5.
