Yeah, clock spring scares me, too. I ruined one by pinching the wires when I was impatient about pushing the steering wheel on without being careful to pull the wires all the way into the wheel before I tightened the bolt. DOH! Horn was on all the time the ignition was on. That may be OK in NYC and on I285 here in ATL, but in the 'burbs it's frowned upon. :-)
The rack came out OK. I'm taking my time because I'm also replacing all of the PS hoses and the PS pump, along with the boot where the shift rod goes through the firewall. Got 3 cars, so it's not a big deal if this one sits on jack stands for a while. Taking the PS pump out is a PITA. The factory service manual is overly optimistic about the procedure (and the car they took pics of for the manual doesn't have A/C.)
Phoenix Rack and Axle farmed out supplying the rack to (IIRC) Indianapolis Rack and Axle. Got it quickly. Hopefully the whole job will be sewn up tomorrow morning.
I was going to do it 4 weeks ago but life changed suddenly.
