0. I'm sorry, but all these answers are about 16v. I assume that saab kept up on the part upgrades, and that your '90 8v has the same tensioner. I could be wrong, hence the disclaimer
1. I'd guess between 2-300,000 is reasonable if you have kept the oil clean.
2. You CAN perform a swap with the engine in the car. It requires a special chain, with master link, and maybe some special tools to keep everything synchronized when you perform the feed-in swap. Basically you should pull the engine if you want to replace the chain guides, which you will want to do if they are worn.
3. it will be a terrible mess if the chain fails while driving. you'll lose valves and etc. The saab inline 4 is most definetely an 'interference type' engine.
