Hi Michael,
In my 900i (8-valve), the fuel pump always could be heard; for instance, when turning the key to the point just before ignition (- don't remember the letter there), the fuel pump is heard nice and clear from the right hand side of the rear, for 1-2 seconds, while it "primes" the fuel-system; I consider this sound reassuring everything works fine....The only reason I do not hear the fuel-pump working during operation is because of the engine and tyre-noise.
About the sense that your engine is not getting the gas it requires when starting cold, this could also be a sign of water in the gas; this is a common problem, and is easily fixed by adding carburettor-alcohol (isopropanol) to the fuel, ½ litre for 20-30 litres of fuel. Running on this mixture will immediately eliminate the water-in-the-fuel effect, and the water will be "burned" along with the gas. Try this, it is a cheap fix and worth a try.
Mike
