As you note, Tcar, Consumer's Reports has check-rated Nu Finish for over a decade, on both a cost and performance basis. (It's not "crap," Jordan.) It provides a clear protective coating that repels water, protects against UV fading, and doesn't yellow like wax crystals do. It lasts longer than waxes. The showroom condition of the paint on my cars is a testament to its efficacy.
If you have a clearcoat finish on your car, it's important you don't use abrasive polishes or rubbing compounds to remove the oxidation. Older paint systems, such as on 30 year old Detroit machines, didn't have the clearcoat, and you do get the best results from polishing the paint -- which actually removes the uppermost molecular layers of paint as you go along. (You can tell when the rag you're using turns the color of the car.) I used to use Blue Coral's system on my old '67 musclecar, with beautiful results. I'd never use it on my Saab, though.
Using an abrasive cleaner on a clearcoat finish removes the clearcoat! If your paint is in really bad shape, you might be to the point where something like that is warranted, but after a few cycles of removing paint and waxing over it, you'll eventually be in need of a new paint job. Clearcoat paintjobs are different -- the color layers are thinner than the old style paint systems with the color right on top. When you get down to the color in a clearcoat paintjob, there isn't far to go before you're through to the primer undercoats.
Just be really careful if you decide to go with mild rubbing compounds. Try the very mildest or least abrasive types first, and don't use a random orbit power buffer, or you'll eat right through the paint before you know it.
My recommendation is that you give the Nu Finish a shot first. If it doesn't work, you've only lost a few dollars and an hour or so of your time, and you haven't risked damaging your paint. If you're not satisfied with it, you can always buy the expensive stuff and spend a day with the multi-step process afterward. The first rubbing compound step will remove the Nu Finish for you.
