When I first acquired my SAAB 900i (1990 5-d model) 1½ year ago I for a long time struggled with a clunking sound coming from the front end whenever bumping over for example a speed-bump (-going 30 or more mph).
I finally found, that simply adjusting (levelling) the hood-bearing bolts in either the right or left hand side right in front of the wind-shield cleared the problem.
What you will have to check out for is whether the hood has any play when placing one hand flat over the right/left corner in front of the windshield, placing the other on top of it and then pushing down on the corner of the hood several times, quickly....Hope this explanation did not get to complex to comprehend...
Point is, the clunking sound could very well come from the hood not resting firmly on the body, and the adjustment to make it rest firmly is actually quite simple, a matter of loosening two nuts on a bolt and either raising or lowering the bolt.
