I have a 1990 900 (no S, sorry: same car, less gadgetry) with looseness in the front end. 140k, previous owner didn't do his own maintenance, et cetera. When I go around a corner sorta medium hard, the car will alter its track noticeably, and it feels like someone just twisted the steering wheel suddenly without notice. It scares me to think that I will have to wait until Thanksgiving to put in the front end hardware I bought in august. (Tie rod ends and ball joints- six hours, requires realignment) I will not go around corners hard until then, which is a shame since "having fun on a tangent" is why I bought the car. I detected absolutely no play in the wheels when up on blocks, but it is still there. This front end overhaul is a costworthy one: two hundred bucks and six hours of swearing at your car sure beats popping a tie rod end and flipping your car (never had this happen: this is why I'm doing the service).
