I just bought a pair (hakka 10s on front still good) of the newer Hakka Q tires. They're good, even though I haven't driven in the snow yet. Stupid NY won't snow until December 26th. I recommend you check out nokiantyres.com for the finnish parent company's web page which is very informative, as well as nokiantires.com for the US distributors. I have had nothing but good luck with them and they're $35 less apiece than the Gizzies. I got mine for $60 each because I work at a Volvo dealer. I recommend the Hakka 1 or Hakka Q (mine), the NRT is so-so in snow but good in all weather, the NR-10 (old style, still popular) is great on snow but seems to understeer easily under throttle in the rain. They have a graph on one of the pages that defines where the Hakka Q does better/worse than the Hakka 1s. As far as finding a distributor, check the US web page and your local phone book for the tire distributor that has the most brands listed next to it- they probably sell them to dealers and tire stores who mark them up again, so you are best off bypassing the national chain stores.
Also, the Hakka Qs are siped into oblivion, which makes them great on ice, but the first thousand miles were incredibly squirmy even with them on the rear. Now all those little hairy things are just about worn off and they are quiet as anything.
The pirelli winter tires we have owned (190 and ps-2) were !Noisy as hell! and made the entire car vibrate on our '85- seriously the dash vibrated up and down 30-50 mph.
It's nice to hear all the great classic 900 snow stories on this post- I am looking forward to the winter. I was stuck in a Volvo 245 last year, but it had Gislaveds on it (wanna buy 'em?- fourteen inchers!) and it was fun.
