Following the advice here, I searched high and low to find the coveted Permatex 518 (now called 51813) to use on the timing chain cover (which has no gasket, for you folks that haven't removed yours yet). After paying around $5US a tube for RTV Blue and then RTV Ultra Grey, I found the "real thing - Anaerobic 518". The cost? $15.50, marked down from $19.20 for a 1.7 oz. tube. Jeeezzzsss; this stuff better be good!
So my question is, does anybody know what the difference is between these 3 products, and why is 518 3 or 4 times the price? All 3 products are "Permatex" brand. And my recolection from being a chemical lab technician in my youth is that RTV is an "anaerobic" curing product. Anyone have some insights here?
I sure hope this stuff doesn't "set-up" in the tube before I need to use it again. Maybe when I'm done with the head gasket replacement, someone could use this on another project and pass it along when they're done. ???
