Hey Guys,
I understand about going with another engine, and that was my plan. My plan was to remove my engine in preparation for another one. While I had the engine on the ground, I figure I should really see what the problem was. These mechanics were saying that the engine suffered major damage. The only damage I see is a one inch piece of guide broken off and most likely jammed the chain. The chains and sprokets looks fine.
The cost of a used engine, not a aero, is about $1,500. I don't think I need this. I am in the process of moving and will have no place to store my old engine. I don't think my engine should be junked when the problem is really minor. I wasn't planning on re-doing the head, but getting one rebuilt from Errikson for around $700. I figure that, and all new guides and maybe chains should not cost more then $1,000. Although more work then just installing a used engine(which I am not knocking), but I will know what I have. I've taken the mystery out of the engine.
Now, talking to you guys, is throwing my confidence off. I really appreciate and respect the opinions on this board, but I think it is important to remove the mystery out of the cars we love. Me and my brother used to rebuild classic 900 trannys.
Since this car is important to me, and I have little time, I am thinking of sending the engine to a shop to have then do the guides and install a new head. I don't know yet. There is risk and chances I will take if either directions.
I will keep you guys posted. Thanks again for all the imput.
Patrick
