Hi Folks,
Background: About four weeks ago, my '94 aero with 68k on it died suddenly on me. I towed it two garages, which told me that I need a new timing chain, etc. The last guy told me that the damage was very extensive and it would cost close to $3,000. He also mentioned that I need a rebuilt head, due to bent valves(after a compression test) Last Friday, I took it back home and decided to pull the engine out and put in a used engine.
The problem with a used engine is that you just don't know the true mileage and the cost at the boneyards were around $1,500. I finally resolved to see if I do could do the work on my existing engine. I pull the engine and tranny out and took off the timing cover. The timing chain and balance shaft chain is complete in tact and looks fine. I discovered that about one inch off the top of the timing chain guide broke and apparently jammed the chain(s). That was the problem!!! Saab made these guide out of plastic. That was stupid. Really stupid.
Anyway, I am going to replace all the guides(good and bad), get a rebuilt head from Errikson and get my baby back on the road. The cost shouldn't be more then $1,000. A far cry from $3,000.
I've never done this job before, but I think it is difinately doable, thanks to this board. Quick question:
(1) I believe Zeke mention to watch out for the intermiate shaft because it can break easy. Where is this located. It is the shaft that joins the axle hubs?
I will keep you guys posted.
Thanks
Patrick
